Capital Assets and Financial Management
The intern will assist the University Coordinator of Business Practices to improve university business practices by participating in special projects, developing training opportunities, and maintaining ongoing programs / activities. The Business Practices role in this effort is to support effective and efficient means for financial management activities by building process excellence and effective process execution. A key to successful and sustainable business practices activities is the active inclusion of the end-user, customers, and stakeholders throughout any change management.
The intern will assist in maintaining several ongoing activities such as the Departmental Business Manager’s Portal, Policy 3005 Reviews, and assist with Business Plans for newly identified activities or services.

Office of the Budget and Financial Planning
The Office of Budget and Financial Planning (OBFP) at Virginia Tech manages a budget in excess of $1.3 billion. The intern will work with OBFP leadership or with one of our three teams on any of the following projects:

The Virginia Tech Procurement Department will offer the intern valuable exposure and hands on experience working with the university's eProcurement solution (HokieMart) and contributing to all facets of the formal procurement process for the purchase of goods and services (example: Requests for Proposals and Invitation to Bid). The candidate will actively engage in sourcing and outreach to viable SWaM (Small, Woman-owned and Minority-owned) vendors that may offer products and services that meet the university's needs. Finally, the candidate will experience the complete life cycle of the purchasing process in assisting with the surplus process of goods that have reached the end of their usefulness at the university.

Hokie Passport Services
Hokie Passport Services (HPS) provides the official identification card that permits authorized access to university services and facilities, manages student dining accounts in university dining halls and maintains individual debit accounts for use in various vendor locations on and off campus. The intern will receive valuable exposure to the customer service aspect of HPS and benefit greatly from interacting with and serving the student population, employee population, and their guests. The intern will get a unique opportunity to experience Hokie Passport Services’ support of Dining Services and Conference and Guest Services while also gaining knowledge of the ID production process, general operations, electronic door access, and the robust CSGold system.

Finance Information Technology
Finance Information Technology (FIT) will not work as an independent track selection but will work in conjunction with the concentration areas chosen by the intern. An intern will be able to work on both the operational side and non-operational side of FIT. The focus would be primarily on the data, systems, processes, and reports that are involved with making data driven decisions in the chosen department.
The intern will assist in conducting structured, limited-scope compliance reviews and may assist Senior Auditors and the Audit Manager in the performance of financial, compliance, and operational audits of campus organizations and departments. The work assigned to the intern will generally be well defined and is expected to be carried out with supervision from the Auditor-in-Charge (AIC) and/or Audit manager. Interns may assist in communicating audit results, including the preparation of written reports.

The Controller's Office provides fiscal services to the university and serves as an interface with external agencies for fiscal matters. The Controller is responsible for ensuring that all funds are properly received, spent, and reported in accordance with university policies and state, and federal regulations. To accomplish these objectives, the Controller provides oversight to four functional areas, within three departments (Controller’s Office, The University Bursar and Insurance & Risk Management).

Office of the Vice President for Finance
The Office of the Vice President for Finance will introduce the intern to the overall structure and organization of the Finance functions in the university. Additionally, the intern will be exposed to the specific activities in the Office of Vice President for Finance which may include an introduction to the university governance process including reporting and management of financial reports to the Board of Visitors and to the state and federal agencies. The Office of the Vice President for Finance manages multiple financial, budgeting, and operational processes including Virginia Tech Foundation as a related corporation. The Vice President for Finance is the signatory for university contracts and the intern will be exposed to the due diligence process in examination and review of contracts as they are processed through the Vice President for Finance office. Finally, the intern will be exposed to the various reports and responses prepared for the state and federal government for compliance and accountability.
